RFID uses radio frequency in order to access the locks. One way to do this is to have ID badges with the chip on them. Then there are readers by the door. When the chip nears the reader, the sensor will trigger the door to unlock. It could also trigger the door to open, if it's attached to an automatic opener. The nice thing about RFID chips and sensors is that you can pick how sensitive the reader is going to be. It can be set so that the chip has to actually touch the reader to unlock the door, or a little less sensitive, which will let the door unlock as the person with the chip gets close to the door. 

Biometrics

Biometrics is another way that you can electronically control the lock and make sure that no one who shouldn't have access can get into the room. Biometrics doesn't depend on someone having a key or a code, it depends on the person being the key. If you are going to do a biometric lock in your office, you can have the lock opened by a thumbprint. In order to unlock the door, the person's thumbprint would have to be coded into the computer controlling the lock. When the person needs to unlock the door, all they need to do is press their thumb up against the sensor and wait for it to unlock. There are various ways that the thumbprint sensor will work. One is that it will read the thumbprint. Another is that the sensor can read the pattern of the veins in the thumb. Those are as unique as a fingerprint and harder to come up with a way to bypass.
